FAQ

Common Questions

Frequently asked questions about BMI accuracy, formulas, height-weight guidelines, and data privacy.

What is the standard formula used to compute BMI?
The standard formula is weight in kilograms divided by the square of height in meters (kg/m²). For imperial units, weight in pounds is multiplied by 703 and divided by height in inches squared.
Does BMI measure body fat directly?
No, BMI is an indirect indicator. It measures excess body weight rather than excess body fat, which means it may not differentiate between muscle mass and fat (e.g. for athletes).
What is considered a healthy BMI range?
For adults, a healthy BMI is classified between 18.5 and 24.9. Under 18.5 is underweight, 25 to 29.9 is overweight, and 30 or above is obese.
Does the tool store my weight measurements?
Absolutely not. All inputs are processed entirely inside your local browser memory. No health or personal details are uploaded to our servers.
Is this BMI calculator suitable for children?
This calculator uses the standard adult BMI classification. While the base formula is similar, children and teens require age-and-gender-percentile charts to evaluate weight.
