Career

Sridevi, born on August 13, 1963, is an Indian actress who has starred in hundreds of movies in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam. She began acting at age four and made her debut as an adult in the early 1980s. She established herself as one of the leading actresses of her time, and although Sridevi left the industry in 1997, industry members have considered her as an of the most talented and prominent actresses in India.

Sridevi was born and raised in Sivakasi, a district in Tamil Nadu. His mother tongue is Tamil. His father’s name was Ayyapan (lawyer) and his mother’s name was Rajeswari. Sridevi has a sister, Srilatha. She has two stepbrothers from her father’s previous marriage. His father died while filming Lamhe, his mother while doing Judaai. Although it is a Hindu custom for the son to light the funeral pyre, Sridevi lit the pyre for his mother’s last rites.

Personal Life

Sridevi married film producer Boney Kapoor on June 2, 1996. Boney and his first wife Mona Shourie Kapoor had lodged Sridevi in ​​their home during Sridevi’s stay in Mumbai. At that time Boney and Mona had been married for several years and had two children, Arjun and Anshula Mona Kapoor stayed at Boney Kapoor’s parents’ house for 10 years after the divorce to give their children a sense of family. Boney Kapoor and Sridevi have two daughters: Janhvi and Khushi. Through her husband, she is related to the great clan of movies Surinder Kapoor (see List of Clans of Bollywood movies). The actor Anil Kapoor, his co-star in several films, is his brother-in-law.

Sridevi began his career as a child artist in the Tamil film Kandhan Karunai (1967) and acted in many Tamil and Telugu films. During his early adult career, he acted in several films of Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam. Many of his Malayalam films were directed by I. V. Sasi. Some examples of his notable Malayalam films are: Aadhyapaadam, Aalinganam, Kuttavum Sikshaiyum, Aa Nimisham. In 1976, Sridevi obtained his first great opportunity as a heroine in Moondru Mudichu by K. Balachander, where he starred alongside Kamal Haasan and Rajnikanth. In many ways, this movie was a milestone in Tamil cinema. It was also one of the first important Rajnikanth films.

After Moondru Mudhchu, Sridevi had a succession of great successes with these two Tamil superstars. With Kamal Haasan, he starred in films such as Guru, Sankarlal, Sigappu Rojakkal, Thaayillamal Naanillai, Meendum Kokila, Vaazhve Maayam, Varumaiyin Niram Sigappu, Neela Malargal, Moondram Pirai, 16 Vayathinile. With Rajnikanth, he acted in films such as Dharmayuddham, Priya, Pokkiri Raja, Thanikattu Raja, Adutha Varisu, Nan Adimai Illai, etc. Sridevi was the number one actress in Tamil films during the 1979-83 period.


During the same time, Sridevi also ventured into the Telugu language films. He performed with all the main heroes in Telugu. Several of his Telugu movies were made by K. Raghavendra Rao. With NT Rama Rao, he starred in films such as Konda Veeti Simham, Vetagadu, Sardar Paparayudu, Bobbili Puli, etc. With A. Nageswara Rao, he acted in films such as Mudulla Koduku, Premabhishekham, Bangaru Kanku, Premakanuka, etc. With Krishna she acted in films such as Kanchu Kagada, Kalavari Samsaram, Krishnavatharam, Borripellum Bolludu, Khaidi Rudrayya, etc. After Kamal Haasan, Sridevi has performed the most films with Krishna. Towards the end of his career in Telugu, he began acting in Hindi movies. Many of his first Hindi movies starred Jeetendra and were remakes of his Telugu movies, directed mainly by K. Raghavendra Rao and K. Bappaiah.



In 1978, Sridevi starred in his first Hindi movie, Solva Saawan, which failed at the box office. However, his second film, Himmatwala, was a success and established his status in Bollywood. The film also earned him the famous Thunder Thighs nickname. This was followed by critically acclaimed drama Sadma, which is often cited by critics as the most definitive woman-child performance of her career. Throughout the 1980s, he starred in a galaxy of blockbusters, including Tohfa, Nagina, Mr. India, Chandni and Chaalbaaz, in which his double role earned him the first Hindi Filmfare Award for Best Actress. The commercially successful Nagina is remembered for her iconic dance sequence at the climax of the film. His performance in the blockbuster of Shekhar Kapur, Mr. India, won his excellent reviews, and his comic moment was praised. Yash Chopra’s successful poet, Chandni, earned him another nomination in Filmfare.

Yash Chopra directed Sridevi again in the innovative modern classic Lamhe (1991), where the sensitive and intense double role act immortalized her forever in Hindi cinema. He also won it, his second Filmfare Award for Best Actress. She followed him with acclaimed performances in films like Khuda Gawah, Gumrah and Laadla. Kshanam Kshanam, launched in 1992, won the fourth Filmfare Award for Best Actress. Sridevi is one of the few Bollywood actresses who dictated terms and for whom exclusive papers were written. After the drama Judaai (1997), he left the industry to marry the filmmaker Boney Kapoor and raise his two daughters, Jhanvi and Khushi.

After a six-year pause, Sridevi returned to the small screen, briefly, in the popular Sahara situation comedy Malini Iyer (2004-2005). She also appeared in Jeena Isi Ka Naam Hai for Karishma Kapoor (2004) and as a judge on the television program Kaboom (2005). He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Asian Academy of film and television. Sridevi performed a mix of some of the popular songs that were previously performed at the 52nd edition of the 2007 Filmfare Awards.
