FAQ

Common Questions

Answers to your common questions about provident funds, interest rates, increments, and pensions.

How is the employer's contribution divided in EPF?
Although you contribute a flat 12% of your basic salary directly into your EPF account, your employer's matching 12% is split: 3.67% goes directly to your EPF account, and 8.33% goes into the Employees' Pension Scheme (EPS), capped at a standard wage ceiling.
How does the EPF interest rate compound?
The EPF interest is compounded annually, but calculated monthly. The interest rate declared by the government is applied to the running balance at the end of each month, and the accumulated interest is credited to the account at the end of the financial year.
What is Voluntary Provident Fund (VPF) and is it supported here?
Yes, VPF allows employees to contribute more than the mandatory 12% of their basic salary (up to 100%) to their provident fund. It earns the same interest rate as EPF and is a popular tax-saving instrument.
Can I withdraw my EPF amount before retirement?
Yes, partial withdrawals (advances) are permitted for specific events like medical emergencies, higher education, home purchases, or wedding expenses. Complete withdrawals are only allowed after retirement or after being unemployed for over 2 months.
Is EPF interest taxable under current laws?
Historically, EPF returns were tax-free. However, in many jurisdictions (such as India), interest on employee contributions exceeding a certain threshold (currently ₹2.5 Lakhs per financial year) is subject to income tax.
